I Hate This

This is one thing I can't stand in writing. It is when I have nothing to write.

I have so many ideas it is not even funny. But which one to work on? Nothing seems to be coming at the moment. Right now, I'm teetering between two YA fantasies I have called Your Reality, My Fantasy and The Unicorn Maiden. I am also thinking hard about my MG fantasy series, The Unicorn Queen. But which one to write?

I have no clue right now. This is the most frustrating thing for me. Yes, it is worse for me than waiting on literary agent responses (or lack thereof). I always want to write. I get joy out of writing. But when that stupid, evil little demon called Writer's Block pops in, I'm in for a stressful time.

What about you? If you can't write, does it drive you up the wall? Or do you act like a normal person and find something else to do besides search through your story notes and ideas for something to write?

I decide, "It's time to work on X."

Then, when I look at X and can't think of what to write, I pull out my lead pencil and paper and start figuring out it needs. Some works need more planning, some need expansion and worldbuilding, some need careful examination to figure out how my last few chapters have gone awry.

If I'm still staring at it thinking "I'm stuck and haven't a clue why," I do free-associative writing about the project. I start with "I'm stuck," and keep asking myself questions and writing about it until I figure out what's making me that way.

Sometimes it's a matter of having all these neat ideas and not knowing which I should be working on. That's where the deciding to work on a specific one comes in.

Be warned, though, that you probably don't want to decide to work on one that you know you likely lack the skill to pull off yet.

Those are some interesting tips, Carradee. I'm going to have to give them a try. Thanks! :)

You know me; I transform into a normal person and do poi. ;)
You helped ME with this problem before so now I get to return the favor. I pick up the story thats 2nd on my stack. (I file stories vertically in my bedroom floor) That way it's not the last one I picked up. If I start to work on it and it's not what i want to do, or i can't, then i try the next one down. haha if you try more than two stories and still can't get into it...take a day off. Play with your 16 cats. Take a walk. Being outside makes me want to write sometimes; and it's refreshing!

btw: anyone else annoyed that these word verifications aren't real words? (yeah, I just used chtspk on a writing blog!) :D

EDIT: (yeah i just used chatspeak to complain about fake words.)

Sarah, thanks for your help! Walking really helps me too, and I have a good walk to my mailbox. :)

(By the way, it's closer to 25 cats.)

First off, don't call it 'writer's block' -- you'll paralyze yourself thinking like that (plus the very existence of 'writer's block' is still under debate).

You've got a writer's heart, Madison. Have faith that this here wishy-washy spell will dry up soon. Cuz it will.

Then you'll be all excited again about whatever you're cranking out.
